We had toyed with the idea of creating a recipe book prior to the reunion. Despite some interest, it never really got off the ground. I do think that many family members might have some great recipes to share!
I'd love to be able to have several recipes available to hand out at the reunion. Do you have a good recipe for something your memere used to make? Are you known for something in particular? Do you have a favorite square to bake or soup to serve?
Send me your recipe ahead of time, and I'll have it ready to hand out! (Uh... the recipe... not the item... sorry, folks, but I'm good at collecting and planning, but not necessarily baking!)

Contact List
There are many people who will be meeting for the first time at the reunion, or reuniting after many, many years apart. We'd love to make it easier for everyone to stay in contact in the future!
The Facebook page will stay up for a while, at least, and will be a great way to share pictures and reunion memories (no hashtags needed.) This blog (which gives the frustrated wannabe writer inside of me a place to get way too many words out- see my Shakespearean ploye post!) will stay active as long as I have any belief some poor soul is reading it.
But I assume that many people will want to stay connected the old fashioned way- phone and e-mail (thought I was going to say Pony Express, huh?) Therefore, I'd love to have a contact list available so that nobody feels pressured to collect information at the event. I do not, however, want to give out any contact information that someone wants kept private.
If you would like your name, e-mail address, and/or phone number shared with the entire family, please let me know that it's okay to do so. I will prepare a list for everyone to receive, and it will only contain information I've been given permission to share.

Everyone is invited to Mass at St. Mary's in Eagle Lake at 11am. This Mass will be said with the intention for all family members who have passed. Even if you're not planning on attending the Sunday lunch, you're welcome to join us at church! How many Blanchettes can fit in St. Mary's?
Following Mass, lunch will be served back at the school. Some of the gang will be heading over there right around 12 or a little after, but lunch will likely be served around 1. We'll eat, talk, play cards, and have fun together before closing our reunion at 3.
The fun does not stop there, though! If you're staying in the area, please consider joining us that night at the Soldier Pond fireworks! Soldier Pond is celebrating the entire weekend, and ending their celebration Sunday evening with a bang. We'll know more about the timing and location later, and will share at the reunion. We'll find a good meeting spot!
There will also be fireworks over the St. John that evening in Van Buren (following an international cross-border tug-o-war!) See the CMA schedule for more information.

With just ONE MONTH to go, it's time to finalize plans for the reunion weekend!

We'll have some info packets that you can pick up, some snacks, and friendly faces between 1pm and 3 pm!

Official Schedule Released
The CMA has released the official schedule for the entire two weeks! You can find it here: http://www.cma2014.com/en/programmation/programmationcomplete. At the time of posting this Blog entry, the web format was not loading completely, but the PDF was working fine.
It looks like it will be a very busy time in northern Maine, New Brunswick, and Quebec! The CMA kicks off on August 8 with a day jam packed with activities. There will be an early morning ceremony at Beau Lake, where the three separate regions meet. While this ceremony is only open to a handful of dignitaries and First Nations elders, it will be broadcast live to community breakfasts, including one at Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent. The breakfast begins at 6:45 with the broadcast beginning at 7am (EST.) Tickets are $10 and include a buffet breakfast. Tickets can currently be purchased at the Fort Kent Chamber of Commerce office.
From 3-5, the party really takes off in Edmundston. Between street performers, musicians, and yummy food, it will be one big block party downtown! The Botanical Garden will also be hosting a native-themed celebration honoring one of their mosaicultures. At the same time, there will be a separate community collaboration in Edmundston to create a wampum belt, representing the relationship between Acadians and First Nations.
This all leads up to the opening ceremony in Turgeon Park at 5:00. Entitled "Seeds," the opening ceremony will involve some public addresses, exchanging of symbolic gifts, and a general welcome. Stick around after the ceremony to see performers from Circus Stella stilt-walking and juggling through the crowd! They'll be around from 6:30-8 (NB time.)
The night ends with a concert featuring Roch Voisine, Wilfred LeBouthillier, Annie Blanchard, Paul Hebert, les Danseurs du Madawaska, and many more! The concert begins at 8:30 NB time.
It is not currently known what the cost of these events will be. The CMA is currently selling bracelets for $20 a piece that will allow entrance into all CMA events during the two weeks. They are available locally in Maine, NB, and Quebec. I am trying to get some information for all of us out of towners, and will pass it on to you all once I know!
Saturday is also crammed full of events throughout the region. The CMA schedule breaks it down for you, color coding where the event will take place. Fort Kent will be hosting the annual Ploye Festival, starting early that morning. It is also the 50th anniversary celebration of the Maine Ski Museum at Lonesome Pines, and the Commemoration of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty International Ceremony at the Fort Kent Blockhouse.
There are also a few non-CMA events going on, including the Fish River Health Fair in Eagle Lake, and the Freedom Fest concert at the FK airport. We'll be providing more information about these events in future posts!

The Great Family Crest Debate
While tracing genealogical roots, many families find their family crest. The crest often shows specific colors or images that represent characteristics of the family. This can give insight to the past as well as a unifying image for the family today.
These days, such research should be easy, right? A simple Google search can tell you almost anything, and even bring up images of family crests. Well, not quite so easy for the Blanchette Family.
Internet searches and various records show two very different crests. Houseofnames.com, which provides information on all different family names, shows the blue and white crest featuring... well, they look like dancing lions to me, but I have a feeling they are not. According to houseofnames.com, the Blanchette name comes from the nickname Blanc (white), which could have come from blonde hair or a "reputation for purity and piety." That's right, folks, this website thinks the original Blanchettes were pure and pious! Or maybe we should be favoring the blonde idea (that is the legend I have always heard. Note: I have never been blonde, and I come from a branch of the family that tends toward dark hair.) The website does provide some background information on the family name that seems to connect with what we know- originated in Normandy, and a notable "first settler" of this family in the Great Migration to New France was Pierre from Picardy, who married Marie Fournier in Quebec City in the mid 1600s. CMA Opening Ceremonies
The Congres mondial acadien opens on August 8, 2014, with a day full of events. If you'll be in the area on Friday, you might want to check out some of the happenings!
The CMA officially opens with a formal early morning ceremony, Erasing the Borders. Though this program is not open to the public, there will be a live webcast throughout the area. Several communities will be hosting breakfasts and showing the webcast, including Fort Kent and Van Buren, ME, and Edmundston, NB. This event will begin at 7am (ME/QC, 8am NB.) More details to come about the community breakfast locations!
Erasing the Borders will be followed by an ecumenical service at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Edmundston, NB at 9am (ME/QC, 10am NB.) Afterwards, several towns in the region will be celebrating with cultural activities and community lunches, with Madawaska, ME being the most local to our reunion home.
That afternoon, the center of activities will shift to Edmunston, NB. There will be an assortment of activities in the streets and parks of Edmunston beginning at 1pm (ME/QC, 2pm NB.) These activities lead up to the official opening ceremony at 3pm (ME/QC, 4pm NB) at Turgeon Park in Edmunston.
Plan to stick around Edmunston, as there will be a fantastic concert at 7pm (ME/QC, 8pm NB) that night, back in Turgeon Park. The Acadie of the World concert will feature recording artist and actor Roch Voisine, as well as numerous other artists.

The Blanchette Family Reunion 2014
is an opportunity to connect with family members and share good food, fun
times, and fond memories.
2. When is the reunion? And where?
The reunion is August 9 and 10,
2014, and will be held at the Eagle Lake Elementary School in Eagle Lake, ME.
3. How do I register for the reunion?
You can register online at
blanchette.cma2014.com. Please do not
put a “www” or “http” in front of the web address- that is the actual web
address.
Once on the website, select
REGISTRATION. You can fill out the form
directly on the website. In order to
submit the form, you must click “Check Calculation” at the bottom. After you click this, a SEND button will
appear.
You may also print out a copy of
the registration and mail it in along with the check.
Please include your e-mail address
on your check so that we can confirm that we received it.
4. My mother/sister/cousin/great-aunt’s
brother’s cousin doesn’t have internet access.
What can we do?
If you know of relatives who do not
have internet access or are not comfortable using the internet, please help
them out by printing a copy of the registration for them.

5. Are you providing overnight accommodations? Where can we stay?
No, we are not providing overnight
accommodations. Every reunion attendee
is responsible for finding their own overnight accommodations.
We have two blog posts addressing
this- “Logistics” and “Lodging Part Deux.”
Please refer to these posts to find ideas for accommodations. You may also wish to look for a camp/cabin
rental through a rental website such as www.vrbo.com.
We do recommend booking
accommodations soon, as the hotels and motels in the region are filling up.
Please note that there will be no
overnight accommodations available at the Blanchette camp in Winterville.
6. What will the meals be like? Is it potluck- can I bring something? Will there be a cash bar or open bar?
Our meals (Saturday supper and
Sunday lunch) are being provided by a caterer.
This is not a potluck event.
You are welcome to bring your own
non-alcoholic beverages- coffee, iced tea, lemonade, and water will be served
with meals.
Because our reunion is taking place
at an elementary school, there will no alcohol allowed on the premises.

A Blanchette is a descendant of
Pierre Blanchette, who came to North America in the 1650s from France.
Secondary definition: a human being

The Ploy for Ployes
What’s in a ploye?
That which we call a buckwheat pancake by any other name would taste as
delicious, so a ploye would, were it not a ploye called, retain that dear
perfection, with savory butter or sweet, sweet brown sugar…
Forget Romeo & Juliet.
If William Shakespeare had visited Aroostook County, ME, he would have
written of the beauty of the ploye, the adaptability of the odd-colored
buckwheat pancake, and general yumminess of this local staple.
But what IS a ploye?
Simply put, it’s buckwheat pancake.
It is cooked on one side only- never to be flipped- and served in all
sorts of ways. It can be served with a
pat of butter alongside a stew, or perhaps with some brown or powdered sugar
for an after-dinner treat. Some make it
into a meal, spreading cretons or peanut butter onto a ploye, while others see
it more as a side dish.
Why are we discussing ployes on the Blanchette Family
Reunion blog? No, not just to make you
hungry (but don’t you want one now?)
Because our reunion happens to coincide with the Ploye Festival!
Every summer, the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce
hosts the Ploye Festival. This year, the
festival will be on August 9- the first day of our reunion! The biggest feature of the festival is the “world’s
biggest ploye.” The record is currently
set at 12 feet in diameter. The festival
also features various other activities, and in the past has been home to ploye
wrestling, a ploye eating contest, and craft vendors.
The event is held in downtown Fort Kent, and more details
will come regarding the time and exact location. A visit to the Ploye Festival would be a
tasty way to start reunion day!
Calling All Musicians!
Do you play an instrument or sing? Do you like to perform in front of a
crowd? Rumor has it that the Blanchette
family has some musicians in our midst!
Are you a stand-up comedian? Do
you have a penchant for performing Shakespearean monologues?

Registration Now Open!
We are now 170 days from the start of the CMA, which means were are 171 days from the Blanchette Family Reunion!
I am pleased to announce that our CMA reunion website is now up and running. http://blanchette.cma2014.com/en/
The website has information about the reunion (under the programming tab) as well as registration. A few people have experienced some difficulty with the website, so please let me know if you have trouble. We can also take care of registration through e-mail or regular mail.
Just a few notes about registration:
*All times listed are in Eastern Time (Maine)
*The CMA is expecting visitors from both sides of the border, hence the passport question. Because there will be so much to do in Maine, New Brunswick, and Quebec, we do recommend coming with a passport if you're planning to stay a few days!
*Fees are identical in US and Canadian dollars due to the close exchange rate.
*In order to go to the next line on the registration form, you must first enter the total amount of people at the top.
